| One by one, the children woke up. They put the cooking pot on the portable stove and cooked a meal of eggs and ham. Martina and Arturo quietly buzzed away the smoke from the fire. They ate bread covered with drips of delicious Asturian honey. After breakfast, the children cleaned the plates while the adults slept in one of the tents. They read books in the van and went for walks. It was too cold to stay outside unless you were moving around. They waited for night. The battery on the video game quickly went flat. | ||
| With the arrival of darkness, the difficult journey began again. The van’s engine was making more complaints than ever in the cold air, but Sergio forced it to start. It rattled along the rough dirt roads and around the tight corners of the Cantabrian hillsides. It was definitely scary without any lights. Sergio concentrated on the dark road. Sometimes Maria José drove too. | ||

At some point – they didn’t exactly know when because by now their phone batteries were also flat, and the old van didn’t have a socket – they crossed the border into the Basque state. | ||
| They had reached perhaps the most dangerous part of their journey. They had to turn left, leave the back roads and drive into Bilbao, thirty kilometres away. They would be as obvious as an orange light in the middle of the sea. | ||
| Just before they reached the main road, Maria José stopped the van. ‘Let’s get a few hours’ rest,’ she proposed. ‘We need to look our best for the police. Our story won’t hold up if we arrive before daylight, anyway.’ | ||
