Although the family has been hiding in the Cantabrian hills, the Program appears to have found them again. Where should they go and what should they do? And how can they do anything, given that there’s a lockdown?
A drive through darkened hills
3am, Cantabrian mountains, early spring. No one wanted to get out of bed, but that’s exactly what Maria José was ordering Arturo to do. ‘Hurry up!’ she yelled, trying to sound awake while Arturo blinked in the sudden light.
Everyone was feeling different emotions. ‘Will I hug my parents soon?’ Martina wondered wistfully in the next room.
Inés came inside wearing her sleeping bag and a vague expression. She ate a quick breakfast standing up.
‘You’re going to fall over,’ Sergio warned her.
‘Don’t care,’ she mumbled.
It would take them two nights to drive slowly from Asturias to Bilbao through the hills.
And then what?
The van had already been packed with food, petrol, blankets and clothes. As the children went back to sleep in the back seat, Sergio drove away from the country house that had sheltered them for the last few weeks.
There was no moon. They drove with the lights out. Dogs, in the few houses along the lonely empty road, started barking at the unexpected noise. María José blew on her hands and hoped nobody was in the mood to investigate a lone car engine in the middle of the night.
