The thing about bubbles
Everyone knows bubbles are impossible. Our universe is too sharp for them. They can’t live here long. They arrive from some softer alternate universe, hit something, and are gone. Little children, old men playing parcheesi, and a certain type of mountain goat, all understand the impossibility of bubbles.
The soap and water bubbles that delight young children are both impossible and miraculous, because if you look at one closely, you will see a world that is shiny and distorted inside it. With a pop! the alternate universe dies.
There are different types of bubbles – time bubbles, for example. A time bubble can pull you out of today and into another time – past or future, near or far.
Sometimes it only takes a bit of old wall, writing that no one can read, or a picture of a dead dog and I’m gone, into a time bubble so strong that I can barely see the real world.
As they drove through the night, Maria José was being pulled into a time bubble. She was thinking about last night’s video chat, which had sent them hurrying away from Asturias less than eight hours later. The subject that had been nagging them for weeks had suddenly become very urgent.
‘We’re in lockdown! If you leave, sooner or later you’ll run into a police line. What are you going to say?’ Julia worried.
‘Not to mention, we need lockdown!’ Alfonso pushed in loudly. ‘We need to stop the virus! Maria José and Sergio could get extremely sick. And we have no idea what the virus might do to the children.’
‘We can say that Arturo needs to see a doctor. We can find an apartment. We can pay cash…’ But even as she made the suggestion, Maria José had her doubts.
‘I repeat, you can’t pass through the state borders! Even if you can make up a story for the police, that helicopter will eventually find you!’ Alfonso insisted.
‘But,’ Sergio interrupted, ‘we have no choice! Somehow, we have to cross the state borders. Better the police than the Program, if you ask me. If we travel fast and far, it will slow the Program down. It took them weeks to find us here.’
