Until today, the Asturian weather gods had been unwilling to blow the winter away. However, today the wind was gently prodding the nervous sunshine out from behind the clouds and the children had snuck into the woods. These children were good at being invisible; even the wild pigs didn’t know they were outside. They took a picnic, although they didn’t eat it together.
Arturo felt as free as a bird. Making the most of the gentle weather, he arrived at the top of an enormous hill. On clear days you could see a city – Gijón – and even the sea. The children had never been there. Indeed, they had not even been to the nearest village, a mere five minutes from their house. They didn’t much care: they were glad be far from Madrid, Teruel, and trouble.
Arturo was barely out of breath. After being so sick in Madrid, he was healthy now. Asturias had the best air he had ever breathed, even better than Libros! He wanted to stay here all his life. He leant comfortably against a rock, listening to the bird twitter, happy that today was Saturday, which meant no school.
School. For seven hours every weekday, the children did home school at the kitchen counter in the country house. Arturo, who had not missed any school, was more advanced than the others. Maria José, Arturo’s grandmother, was the teacher – more than teacher, she was also the therapist. Martina still suffered from bad dreams about the program’s prison. And Inés? Well, Inés had her own issues.
Maria José had made some sort of deal with Inés. She came to school every day, stubborn and silent, but she came – it was part of The Deal.
Sergio was the only other adult in the country house. It was comfortable enough, but they often ran out of hot water, and if you didn’t bring in enough wood for the fire, you were cold when you woke up. Sergio was always fixing something or other. As he brushed the dust off his hands, he would grumble that the house would fall down the next time the wind blew.
‘Don’t listen to him,’ Maria José advised the kids. ‘He’s only happy if he has something to grumble about.’ And Sergio would grumble about Maria José. And so it went…
