| The country house and the hills around it were their entire world now. There was nowhere else to go. You see, a virus – sort of illness – had engulfed Spain, and in an attempt to stop it from spreading, the government had decided that adults could only leave their houses to get food, and children never. Even the borders between the different Spanish states were closed. It was called ‘lockdown’. | ||
| The virus had begun on the other side of the world. By January it had come creeping over land and sea towards Spain. Nothing stopped it – no border, no government. You couldn’t put it in prison. You couldn’t keep it in a plastic bag. You couldn’t ask it nicely to go away. People didn’t quite believe what was happening until it had moved into their house and asked what was for dinner. By then, it was too late. | ||
| By mid-February the virus had colonised Spain more completely than the Romans. People were dying. There was no cure. The risk was real, although no one in Martina’s or Arturo’s family had got sick yet. It didn’t take long for the government to decide that lockdown was the only solution. | ||
| Sometimes Arturo walked in on his grandparents huddled together in a private discussion. They would stop talking and look guilty, but, virus or no virus, even the children knew that they couldn’t hide in the Asturian hills forever. Eventually the lockdown would lift, and they would have go back to their proper school in Teruel. | ||
| ‘But how did it start?’ Arturo asked Maria José. | ||
| ‘Nobody knows yet,’ Maria José replied. ‘But everything is connected. When humans interfere with the natural world, the natural world is going to bite back.’ | ||
