| She was parked on a main road heading north with no traffic. Cool! What was she waiting for? Permission? She slid the ambulance into the air, nice and smooth, not even a rattle. Just a big fat baby’s toy down the road. | ||
| But after a few blocks she had to stop. Although she had memorised the metro map, the difference between a map and a road is enormous. There were plenty of metro stations in the area, but where on earth was the specific one she needed? She parked the ambulance and walked around, trying to sense the trains passing under her feet. When she found the station, she ‘drove’ the ambulance there, then started searching for the next station. | ||
| It was slow work. Over a bridge. Under an underpass. Around a corner. Traffic light. Stop. The effort of lifting the ambulance was exhausting. The drugs had not completely left her body, so she wasn’t as strong as usual. Whenever she found a station, she had to park and walk around looking for the next station. She tried to obey the traffic rules as much as she could. If she saw a police car, she directed the ambulance in a different direction. | ||
