‘You’re just in time!’ Maria José yelled, jumping on her. ‘You won’t believe how much trouble we’re in!’ For once, Inés didn’t seemed to mind the hug. In fact, she was grinning.
‘If it isn’t our favourite third wheel,’ Sergio joined in enthusiastically. ‘My grandson has been so lonely without you. And I see you’ve brought four more wheels -’ he said, peering at the beaten-up ambulance.
‘Don’t expect me to share a bedroom with him!‘ she interrupted, pointing at Arturo, who was staring at her from the shadows.
Arturo could distinguish something that might have been tear in her eye. Or it might have been the light. He didn’t know what to say. His eyes were popping out of his head, what with the ambulance and all. ‘How’s the gangrene?’ he eventually managed.
‘Not bad,’ Inés replied.
