We may need to stop for the day somewhere.’
They increased their speed. Sometimes Julia took them through rocky fields with sleeping donkeys or chickens, but after some dogs started barking, they went back to the country roads, always ready to hide at the slightest sound or faintest light.
They reached a small river. ‘We’ll have to find a bridge,’ Julia decided anxiously. It was 5 o’clock in the morning. The lights of Madrid were close, but it may as well have been the city of Constantinople, because it never got closer. Crossing the river added another kilometre to their journey.
Finally they reached the last big freeway 🛣 they had to cross. ‘There’s a cycling path with an underpass through the freeway. We’ll go that way,’ Julia explained. But the underpass was lit up with street lights. It could hardly be more obvious. Could they pass through it without being seen? They waited in the bushes until there were no trucks on the freeway.
‘Now!’ Alfonso yelled. ‘Run!’
They ran into the underpass then out the other side. They hid behind an old brown sign and caught their breath.
‘OK. The last bit,’ Julia said nervously. In other words, the most dangerous bit. ‘It’ll be dawn soon. We have to cross the railway line, then it’s straight to Inés’ hideout. People might be going to work. There’ll be the guards at Pitis station. Keep your eyes open. We’ll run between buildings and anything else that will help us hide.’ Everyone nodded
their agreement anxiously.
