Operation midnight mountains
Once again, the children found themselves in the old van, driving through the night with the lights out, keeping to quiet country roads. Sergio would take the van back to Libros after he had dropped them off at the border of the state of Madrid.
Once again, the drive was very slow. The children slept on the back seat. Eventually the van went under the main freeway coming from the north. The only vehicles were big trucks, taking food to the cities. After another slow hour, they were climbing up into the Guadarrama Mountains. This was the mountain range that they would cross on foot to reach Madrid. Julia had chosen a hiking path which started at the border. It was a hike of forty kilometres or so. Sleeping during the day, they hoped to arrive at Pitis on the morning of the second day.
Sergio parked the van on a treeless hilltop and said goodbye. ‘Safe travelling, all’.
They watched the van drive away. The secrets of the night jumped from tree to tree, racing ahead of them. The Guadarrama range towered above them – while not the size of the Cantabrian range, these mountains were still enormous and the children had to walk straight over them. Here goes nothing, Arturo thought, catching Inés’ eye. They put their backpacks on and walked into the night.
