Madrid episode 18: Ways to be cool, 146 (simple)

Interactive (definitions, icons, linguagraphics and quizzes)

The family and Inés are outside the posh apartment, trying to work out how to save the program’s prisoner. Much against her will, Inés is sitting in their smelly, stinky old van.
‘Good morning, honey,’ said Maria José. ‘Did you get some breakfast?’
Inés said yes, but hungrily looked for more food. ‘Here’s what I have,’ Maria José showed her, ‘Jiménez apples, picked in the orchard yesterday,’ and she offered her a basket. ‘You’re still skin and bone, child. I got you a bus-pass too. You can come out to Cercedilla whenever you like.’
Inés took it without thanking her. She would have preferred something other than apples. She wondered when the others would come back.
‘They’ve gone to look at the apartment. They’re making a plan to free the girl!’ Arturo exclaimed. They sat quietly eating apples for a few minutes.
‘It’s very dusty, isn’t it?’ the old woman observed.
‘It’s always dusty when you’re near buzzers,’ Inés explained. Actually, it was even worse in this suburb than when Arturo had been with her in Teruel.
‘Is that a fact?’ Maria José replied thoughtfully.
‘You’ll help us free that girl, won’t you, Inés?’ Arturo seemed a bit worried that Inés would say no, but Inés was confused again, and she kept her thoughts to herself.
Suddenly Arturo’s family was piling into the van. All these people. All these elbows. It’s like living inside a box of breakfast food, but your feet are outside the top of the box, as if your legs are tree branches and your feet are leaves –
‘Let’s get out of here’, Alfonso suggested. ‘We’ve got a lot to talk about.’
Sergio started the van. Inés sat very still. If she sat very, very still, like an insect on a stick, maybe they wouldn’t notice her, and she could sneak away.
‘Hello Inés. Didn’t see you there! Do you want to get out? Or are you coming?’ the old man asked. The family surrounded her. Inés tried not to panic. She had completely lost her mojo with these people.
Elbows, elbows. Everywhere elbows! Maybe they have an elbow farm. Inés imagined an elbow tree.
